The Ruler of the Sun

Each sign relates to a particular set of mythic figures, and each sign also has a planetary ruler or presiding deity with its own set of stories. The planetary ruler of the Sun sign can give us insight into the god who engenders the hero, for this planet, even more than the ruler of the Ascendant itself, may describe the kinds of situations the hero will meet on his journey. But the Sun ruler is our presiding deity; and the hero and his prize are ultimately the same thing.

My “Star of Destiny” is Mercury at 0 degrees Libra (which reminds me of the cardinal point, and when Uranus in Aries opposed it my life did a total 180).ย Mercury is tightly square Neptune. Neptune is tightly trine my Venus (which rules my Mercury). Venus is in Leo, which brings it back to Sun in Virgo. Venus also conjuncts my MC.

I’ve never given a whole lot of thought to my Mercury – my Venus-Neptune is far more glamorous ๐Ÿ™‚ But I’ve always had a thing for writing – since I was a kid I’ve written in a journal, poetry, short stories, music and lyrics, lists. I write lists constantly. It is the best way for me to get a handle on the chaos in my head and finally get to the heart of a matter.ย

Mercury in Libra makes me very romantic/idealistic, which kinda sucks because my critical Virgo is so hard to please!

How did your life do a 180 with Uranus at 00 Aries? Just curious about Mercury’s influence ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Anonymous

Wow, where do I start. The Air France crash, summer 2009. I went on an airplane and had a panic attack. Anxiety then came into my life. Fear of heights. Nothing I’d had since early childhood. Also my first solo project (music), to take full rein over my production (Uranus in late Pisces was also squaring my natal Neptune at 26 Sag.) Then Ur went retrograde. In 2010 it went direct and I broke off my rocky 6-yr relationship for good. I fell in love w/ someone I hadn’t yet met in person (an author and many other things, his writings won my heart). It started with an email. I was writing nonstop, he was so inspiring. It’s now over, a year later. I’m a different person. Drastic change in diet and I’m 30 lbs thinner. Anxiety issues made me restart therapy among other things to ease my stress. I take my mental health more seriously now. Information overload is no good for me. One bad panic attack showed me my personal limits. I now prioritize what I put my attention on. The benefit being better focus and stamina on my creative projects. Also more present, grounded. For a year I was overstimulated and distracted, and it truly drove me temporarily insane.

    P.S. – It’s rather weird, but I don’t really see myself as a true Aquarius…
Yes – I can be aloof, detached, unpredictable, maybe pretty eccentric and original in some things, independent and a bit rebellious.ย
But still, it’s much more natural for me to associate with the signs of my Venus or Moon…

Maybe it’s all happening because the Sun in Aquarius is in detriment, so I’m actually cut off from my own identity, and it’s difficult for my Sun to find the right way to shine and to fully express itself, though this need is very strong?!

But I’m not very happy about the idea that having an Aquarius Sun denotes putting aside one’s individuality for the sake of the group consciousness…
I don’t feel any distinct need to be a part of any group (or I just haven’t realized it yet) – I’m much more of a loner and individualist, preferring to do things on my own…ย
And being this “faceless”, impersonal part of the group is something really frightening and frustrating in my eyes – since I long for self-expression that is very personal, unique and only MINE!!!ย
But maybe this attitude is unproductive, for I will probably never become a Leo?! =)

I suppose that such tendencies may come from my Moon in Aries, the sign of the Sun’s exaltation, which is also in the Leo decanate!

    • Michelle

Thank you for your insight into the Aquarian Sun. The other aspects to your Sun will change the way your Sun works as well – as I’m sure you know ๐Ÿ™‚

Interesting about your Moon. My Sun is in Aries and Moon in Leo.

      • Anonymous

You’re right Michelle – my Sun builds aspects with Pluto, Neptune and Saturn, so the energies of these planets definitely alter the expression of my Aquarian Sun!

I think people whose Sun is unaspected show its traits in a more concentrated and pure form! ๐Ÿ˜‰

        • Michelle

Probably. Van Gogh had an unaspected Sun.

My 4th house Aquarius Sun has got two rulers:

    1. The modern one is Uranus in Sagittarius, placed in the 2nd house and in a tight conjunction with Jupiter; both planets form a trine with the Moon in the 6th house.

    2. The ancient ruler is Saturn in Scorpio in the 1st house, making a wide conjunction with Pluto in Libra, loosely trining the Sun and squaring Mercury (in the 4th).

I can’t say for sure which of these two rulers I mostly identify with – there’s a distinct Sagittarian streak in me, since I’m sincere, philosophical, idealistic, hopeful, open-minded, exaggerating, a bit lazy and irresponsible, with a deep love of foreign cultures, wanderlust and good humor! I spend a lot of time abroad, and my family and my friends circle is also international!

But I feel pretty Scorpionic as well, being rather secretive, suspicious, deep, emotionally intense, jealous, possessive, resentful, vindictive (but only in theory!), obsessive-compulsive and passionate about everything I love or hate, with the all-or-nothing attitude to life, and the urge for transformation!

I think almost every human being is so complex and contradictive that sometimes it’s hard to find the trace leading directly to the source of this or that peculiarity of one’s character – its uniqueness stems from something so subtle and divine, that even after the most profound research and gaining immense knowledge, some of the eternal questions will still remain unanswered…

    • Michelle

I think almost every human being is so complex and contradictive that sometimes it’s hard to find the trace leading directly to the source of this or that peculiarity of one’s character
Completely agree. I love the mystery of it.

  • Les

My Virgo Sun is in the 2nd and is ruled by Mercury in the 1st. Mercury is also the final dispositor of all other planets in my chart plus it aspects many other planets. My Mercury is in Virgo conjunct Venus and Pluto, sextile Jupiter and Neptune, and out-of-sign square Mars. My Libra North Node is in the 3rd house, so that also ties together Mercury and Venus.

    • Michelle

Are you a technical writer – am I remembering that correctly?

      • Les

Medical writer, interactive training on diseases and drugs for drug reps. I used to do similar work in high tech, writing marketing demos, etc. But yeah, lots of writing.

        • Michelle

          Do you enjoy it?

          • Les

Sometimes. I like learning new things, and I’m good at it. But sitting at a desk all day, day after day, with constant deadlines, gets old. I used to freelance and liked the variety and managing my own time and having clients not bosses, but I starved for many years! (not good with Sun in 2nd house, and Venus conjunct Pluto) Anyway, it’s good for now. Some day I’d like to either do something more meaningful with my long days at work or else have more free time to enjoy doing more fulfilling.

  • Atlast

I felt i was f****ed up with my saturn on the 5th house and conjuncting venus, but now I see that it is my star destiny, since I’m a capricornian. I’m really confused what that means…

    • Michelle

Are you involved in the arts Atlast?

      • Atlast

touchรฉ. I’m really involved, I like pratically any kind of art, from illustration to dance, and I’m right now at a Design College.

        • Michelle

          Lol…there you go! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • firetiger

Rulers and dispositors are also pretty interesting to me. You’re right: they kind of reveal WHAT KIND of ____ are you?

As for me: I am Libra Sun> Venus in Scorpio> Pluto in Scorpio

    Plutonic lover

Pluto’s also the ruler of my Ascendant and dispositor of my moon also so I can’t say for sure which is more relevant (chart ruler or ruler of these planets)

    • Michelle

It’s interesting how your chart is overwhelmingly directed by Pluto, even though you are a Libra. You aren’t a light and fluffy Libra.

  • I am a Leo so I feel doubly blessed. It is also in my 7th house conjunct my DC (by 6 deg). My Sun is also conjunct Mercury and Venus and widely conjunct Jupiter. Relating is very important to me, this is true, but my Sun, Mercury and Jupiter are square Uranus in Scorpio, which is my chart ruler, stationary direct (which I was told is very strong) and conjunct MC.

Yikes…So, I have some 7th house issues which are very prominent in my life – people coming into and leaving my life unexpectedly (which I have done as well), communications can be out there and unexpected which can push people away. Over the past 9 years I have kind of become a loner, which is odd considering all of the relating I am capable of and have done through my entire life, but I think I am suffering from 7th house burn out. My whole life I was attached at the hip to people (best frenemies, romantic partners, father) I couldn’t trust or who weren’t stable and it kind of broke me down after a while. It is kind of tough but I am more willing to working on these issues than before and I am noticing some patterns, which is helping me to stabilize it as much as I can. Actually I think that maturity helps as Iago mentioned. Also helping out transit-wise: Pluto swept out the “wrong crowd” when it went through my 11th house and Saturn has gone through my 7th and my 8th (which was also my return). I no longer think it is appropriate to be “the queen of burned bridges”. I am over that foolish pride phase of my life, more willing to communicate and choose my battles and I am way, way more empathetic and understanding. I now relate more to the loving and creative side of Leo than to the arrogant brat.

Wow, that post felt like therapy. Thank you Michelle!

    • Michelle

That all makes sense according to your chart. You have strong emphasis on three areas: Uranus contacts, the sign Leo and the 7th house.

I no longer think it is appropriate to be “the queen of burned bridges”. I am over that foolish pride phase of my life, more willing to communicate and choose my battles and I am way, way more empathetic and understanding. I now relate more to the loving and creative side of Leo than to the arrogant brat.

      That is a fantastic insight.

    • Michelle

      Adding…
I really love this explanation Erika. I think you perfectly articulated so many patterns in your chart.

      • Iago

        Indeed!

  • Anonymous

This is cool. Addistional knowledge. Sun is in cancer 3rd house so it means my “star of destiny” moon. My asc is aries. Thank God I got trine in moon and mars.

    • Michelle

Thank God I got trine in moon and mars

      That can’t be a bad thing ๐Ÿ˜€

      • amoureuse

yeah, at least it is trine and not square or any stressful aspects because i think this is one of the most important aspect in my chart. … imagine i got lots of squares in my sun. maybe this is the reason why i sort of fight against my mom. but i also fight against domestic violence and/ or any violence against women and children. i am pretty outspoken about it. wrote lots of articles before esp during the lebanon crisis.

        • Michelle

i also fight against domestic violence and/ or any violence against women and children. i am pretty outspoken about it. wrote lots of articles before esp during the lebanon crisis.</I.
          That is fantastic.

  • LB

Venus rules my 2nd house Libra Sun; Venus is conjunct my North Node, Sun, Vulcan (h55), and a whole bunch of asteroids. Venus sextiles my 4th house Saturn, trines Chiron in the 6th and opposes my South Node.

I like the idea of Venus being “The Star of Destiny” in my chart. I’d never heard that before – thanks Michelle!

    • Michelle

      Is Venus in Libra too?

      • LB

Yes, both my Venus and North Node are in Libra – my 2nd house is packed (Ceres is in Libra too, but not conjunct). And in keeping with that Venusian theme, asteroid Aphrodite is exactly conjunct my Virgo Ascendant!

        • Michelle

We are packed in the opposite direction. You have all those Libra planets (etc…) in the 2nd and I have a ton of Aries stuff in the 8th. So interesting!

          • LB

We have a lot of opposite placements – it is pretty weird. One thing though, is for every Libra placement in my packed 2nd house, there’s an opposite planet or point (in Aries) in my 8th. I think that’s one of the reasons I’ve always had good friends who were Aries; I love their forthrightness, even if I do need to learn to be less so – lol!

            • LB

I should clarify – I don’t have nearly as many astrological bodies/points in my 8th (only five), whereas my 2nd house is loaded, especially if you include the many asteroids which are conjunct my four most significant Libra placements. But each of those four (some of which are conjunct) have at least one opposite (sometimes two) in the 8th. I hope that makes more sense.

My 2nd also holds a number of Scorpio placements, but none of them are counter-balanced by an 8th house Taurus placement. I guess that would be Plutonic overkill!

              • Michelle

I guess that would be Plutonic overkill!
                Lol…seriously!

Hm… I don’t have anything in my 2nd house, except for Pluto which, aptly, I am obsessed with getting to the bottom of. I’m not even aware of any asteroids or other bodies in my 2nd. So, I’m more lopsided.

One of the most significant Libra relationships I’ve had was with a 70 year old, vivacious, outgoing Libran coworker. She gave me amazing relationship advice, culled from years of wisdom, exactly when I needed it.

                • LB

If there’s one thing Libra knows about, it’s relationships! After 70 years of experience, I’m sure she had quite a bit of wisdom to share. And she probably appreciated the fact that you valued her input. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Mars Square Uranus

My sun ruler is mercury in 3ยบ gemini, conjunct venus (0 degree orb) and 4 away the sun itself. All them square jupiter in 5ยบ virgo, so it makes me wonder how much dignity is there on the 4 objects.
Amazing timing michelle, cos I wondered about this issue since very few days ago thinking about a friend’s solar ruler importance.

    • Michelle

Check out this post to find out the dignity of those planets: http://astrofix.net/2009/11/29/find-your-essential-dignities/

It’s not too difficult, you just have to download the free software.

      Hooray for good timing!

      • Mars Square Uranus

Thanks michelle, but I didn’t mean so.
I already know that venus and the sun in gemini are peregrine, jupiter in virgo is exiliated and mercury in gemini is dignified, but I wonder if a dignified dispositor can “spread” its goodness to all the other three or not.

        • Mars Square Uranus

I ask this also for any other example like this one.

        • Michelle

          That’s a great question.

If rulers show how the energy potentials are carried out then it makes sense that a dignified ruler would “share the wealth” with the planets it rules. How that translates in actual interpretation, I’m not quite sure. Do you think that the dignities show in your natal chart clearly? Sometimes it seems to me that they are demonstrated better in horary work.

  • Zoa

    My Sun is in Aquarius
It’s modern ruler, Uranus, is in Capricorn and the traditional ruler, Saturn is in its own sign of Capricorn. So for me, no debate about traditional vs. modern rulerships, since my Uranus is ruled by Saturn anyway.
My Sun is also sextile both of them, and the aspect while out-of-sign is almost exact (the orb is 0 deg 40′)
To be honest, I feel extremely Saturnian, in fact, almost everything in my chart leads to Saturn (except Mars in Sag and Jupiter in Aries, which are in mutual reception, and Pluto in Scorpio which is its own dispositor).

    • Michelle

Are your Mercury and Venus in Capricorn too?

      • Zoa

Mercury in Aquarius, which eventually leads to Saturn.
Venus in Aries (disposited by the Mars-Jupiter mutual reception) but in the 10th house, the natural house of Capricorn/Saturn.

        • Michelle

Is the passion that you have from the Venus/Pluto aspects held back, or is it more internal?

          • Zoa

A bit of both actually. I dont’ feel like showing all those deep emotions to just anyone. I’ve learned when to hold back and when not to.

  • Iago

Hmm… the dispositor of my Sun is Mars, Mars is in Pisces. In my dispositor hierarchy, Neptune and Saturn (which are in mutual reception, by the way) control most of my chart.

I wonder how Mars works as my Sun’s ruler, both the Sun and Mars being connected with Pisces/Neptune, which is very different from their nature.

    • Michelle

Mars is the ruler of my Sun too, though it is also one of the final three dispositors of my chart.

I find, when looking at a chart, that I can tell what *kind* of Aries (for example) a person is by where Mars is. I think that the Sun’s ruling planet gives added nuance to the Sun sign. If you are someone who thinks that the Sun is the most important planet in the chart, then the Sun’s ruler becomes more significant than the dispositors of the other planets.

You and I both have an Aries Sun with Mars in Water which makes us a great deal more sensitive than someone with an Aries Sun and Mars in Aries or Mars in Aquarius.

      • Michelle

        Adding…

Our actions, the need for to assert ourselves and remain independent are complicated by over sensitivity to other people, and our surroundings.

        • Iago

Yes, that’s true. When I was younger, I was pretty much the basic Aries type – I was rash and spoiled, brutally sincere, but as I grew up I started to get softer, more sensitive and pleasant to other people. That’s probably because Neptune’s in Capricorn, so my Water qualities come with maturity.

I just miss having the guts to say anything at anyone’s face without caring about what the person would feel lol. I hold things to not hurt people, sometimes even when they’re hurting me, so that’d be a nice way to protect myself.

          • Michelle

I can relate to most of what you wrote here.

      • Patrissia

So… I’m an eight-house sun in Aries with Mars in Taurus on the 9th house in conjunction to my NN.. any ideas? ๐Ÿ™‚
As far as I have noticed, I am more quiet and reserved than many Aries I know, also more in touch with the need to get out in nature, have things, eat good food (and not weird food, as my Moon-Uranus conjunction (tightest one in my chart) would suggest), and all the comfort “stuff” that a Taurus would need.

        • Michelle

That all sounds very Taurean. Sun in the 8th house tends to be more reserved than other Suns too. What is your rising sign?

          • Patrissia

Virgo – also very earthy. Although it’s just these two I have in this element. More than 25% is fire ๐Ÿ™‚

I recently met several astrologers who refer to the ruler of the Sun as “The Star of Destiny.”

Here’s a link on the difference between the chart ruler and the ruler of the Sun: http://astronuts.tribe.net/thread/89e381ce-c4fd-4d9e-b4c3-6d8e4a64c375

Ok if this is more imortant then the ruler of the chart then i have mutual reception here.
I am capricorn with saturn in Gemini and my ascedant ruler is mercury in Capricorn. Mercury also conjuct my sun in 9th house en saturn is in late degrees of 1st house.
Does thid mean that my destiny is in perefct sinc and i will become a guru -;)))) just kidding
