The Midheaven: In Plain Sight

The Midheaven, or Medium Coeli (MC), represents the highest point in the sky at the time when you were born. Depending on which house system you use, the Midheaven usually corresponds to the angle of the 10th house cusp. The Sun reaches its culmination at the Midheaven and then begins to decline in the sky towards sunset (the Descendant).

Noon sun lightWhen the Sun is at its highest point, everything is brightly lit. The high noon Sun beats straight down on everything underneath it. Shadows appear in stark contrast to their sunny counterparts. Everything is distinct, and easy to see.

The Midheaven illuminates our path in the outer world. A bright light shines on the qualities of the sign of the 10th house cusp. This light also shines on any planets that conjunct it (from the 9th house or from the 10th house).

The Midheaven shows those qualities in ourselves that want recognition from everyone. Because these characteristics want recognition, we often seek a career that allows us to display these qualities.

The Midheaven shows qualities about us that are in plain sight. We don’t have to actively try to embody these characteristics- people recognize them anyway. It’s as if we are saying, “look at me!” without ever consciously being aware that that is we are doing.

AMAZING blog! I see our MC’s as kind of like a beacon and a major indicator on how others view us. I have Saturn/Pluto conj a Scorp MC and I can’t even BEGIN to tell you what that is like! I’m a boogy-man to some and a powerful attractive force to others. The reaper, the garbage man, the judge, the executioner, the vixen, the witch, the mysterious stranger, the untouchable, the indestructible…. all in a strong trine to Aquarius Mars with Neptune smack dab in the middle of it. People don’t know what to make of all of it, I don’t blame them. I WANT people to see me as someone who knows with hard work (Saturn) you can transform yourself (Pluto)…when I worked as a weight loss counselor I loved it because I could show people how to utilize those energies.

I’ve recently gotten to know another Cap Sun, Cap rising, with Saturn/Pluto in the 10th (not right on the MC like yours)- it’s amazing how the differences in a chart can make such a big difference. I know your Sun is in the 1st and you have an Aquarius Moon- her Sun conjuncts Neptune in the 12th and she has an Aries Moon in the 4th. She’s quite Neptunian for a Capricorn and she’s very attached to her family- even still, I think she’s going to create a spiritual business dynasty.

There’s something really interesting about this midheaven and how others see you. I have Gemini in my midheaven and people think I am book smart. I don’t even read that much even though I work in the library. My friend who’s got 3 planets in gemini including mercury and sun, who’s a real dabbler in writing and got a knack for it, but doesn’t have a gemini midheaven is not seen as someone who writes. I wrote a little bit in my blog and people think I’m a writer. I haven’t even written anything that amounts to what I would call writing!
But the bad part though is having the impression that I’m not a reliable, stable person at work and in general. I’m seen as one of those happy-go-lucky, doesn’t think about any problems kind of person. They don’t think I’m the most responsible person there is. They wouldn’t be entirely wrong about that though.

I tried searching some of the famous writers’ chart and it’s amazing how a lot of them have gemini midheaven: Oscar Wilde, Jane Austen, Ernest Hemingway, Jack Kerouac, to name a few.
Now I’m thinking maybe I should seriously consider writing something.

I don’t know if people think of me as a writer, but I do know that people think I’m book smart. People always ask me for information, “How do you spell xxx”, “What is the definition of xxx”, etc…There’s some kind of assumption that I’m going to know the answer.

I know people don’t see me as happy go lucky, but I don’t think they take me seriously. I think people think I’m a lightweight. Oh well.

Do you have Virgo rising as well?
Part of the reason I started this blog is because I have the North Node in the 3rd house.

Thank you for reading my blog :D

Can you elaborate? What do you mean? I’m curious :)

I also have Gemini on the MC, with retrograde Mars 8 degrees away in the 9th, and like you, people generally think I’m a lightweight — at least until they get to know me. One of the tightest aspects in my chart is my Mercury/Moon square, so maybe that contributes. Plus, my Mercury is conjunct Neptune (and Jupiter), which clouds things a bit. And I’m sure my Virgo rising doesn’t help matters any. :-)

The funny thing is, the closest aspect in my chart is the conjunction of the Fixed Star, Aldebaran to my MC (within 5 minutes.) I don’t even know what to make of that in terms of how people read me.

I love your blog; I spent several hours this evening just perusing your archives! I’ll be back.

I have Mercury sesquiquadrate Neptune with Neptune opposing my MC and squaring my Virgo Ascendant. I think the impression I give off doesn’t instill confidence in my abilities.

I’m halfway through Brady’s Book of Fixed Stars. I’m still not entirely clear about the way it works, but basically she uses stars “in parans” with the planets and angles. Using this method stars can rise, set, culminate or be on the nadir as the planets rise, set, culminate or are on the nadir. The position of the star designates at which point in life its energy will manifest. A star at the MC will show its effect around mid-life. In the case of Aldebaran, it represents maintaining one’s integrity while pursuing goals- compromising one’s integrity leads to downfall. Incidentally, Aldebaran co-sets (is on the DC) with my MC at 7 Gemini 33′- if I understand it correctly.

Thanks for elaborating; I’m always interested in learning more. I wonder if there’s any wiggle room with that mid-life thing. If not, then unless I live to be a centenarian, I think I’ve probably already enjoyed the benefits of Aldebaran. One thing I’ve noticed is that as I got older, it became critically important that I make honorable choices – which included taking on lots of responsibilities, and a certain amount of sacrifice – if not, I always get a cosmic spank. God has me on a short leash. I’m not complaining, it’s just been interesting to observe.

Jamie Funk at FunkAstrology has mentioned 2012’s yod aspect involving Aldebaran as being potentially significant. Maybe we can check back with one another in a few years, eh?

        • Michelle says:

I feel like I constantly get cosmically spanked. My “higher power,’ or whatever you want to call it, definitely has me on a short leash- it probably doesn’t help that Mercury, the ruler of my Ascendant and MC, is in partile square to Saturn.

Jamie’s interps of the fixed stars are interesting. I’m looking forward to working with them more as I increase my understanding.

I’ll have to check out that yod!

    I have a pisces MC.
With sun and saturn in it(saturn isn’t conjunct to the sun or to the MC, the sun conjunct the MC).
Maybe that’s why I wanna be an actor, no?

I’m still not sure what I’m supposed to be doing, I think, I’m supposed to be creative
    but I’m not sure.

      I can relate!

What I have realized with transiting Neptune through my 6th house these past years is that you can’t force Neptune. The more you try to force clarity, the more confusing the situation gets.

        Thank you!
        I’m glad somebody understands.
That’s good advice too, since I’ve, and everyone else for that matter:-), been trying to force clarity
        for some time now.
I guess I’ve had to wait and see what happens, huh?

That’s kind of interesting/funny you mentioned that since I natally have Neptune Sagittarius in my 6th house(koch/equal)

Transiting Neptune is in my 9th house right now forming a square to my N. Sun,Mars,Mercury,Jupiter, and Quintile Neptune(yeah! a good aspect).
        Pretty tense stuff. :-)

Yeah, I don’t like it too much. I’ve had to completely relax any expectations I have about work or employment. Another thing I’ve begun to understand is that work issues flow better for me when I’m serving unselfish goals.

Do you think that everybody who has a Pisces MC is effected like that?
They have to just wait and see and they do better serving unselfish goals?
I’m not asking for myself, I’m pretty sure I know that answer,:-)but for other people.

The article makes a lot of sense. As I’m looking at my own chart, these are the celestial bodies that aspect to my Midheaven (18° 18′ Libra)

    Sun sextile Midheaven (0° 13′)
    Mercury sextile Midheaven (-5° 03′)
    Uranus square Midheaven (-5° 52′)
    Neptune square Midheaven (-2° 52′)
Part of Fortune trine Midheaven (-2° 19′)
    Ceres sextile Midheaven (0° 28′)
    Vesta semi – sextile Midheaven (-0° 36′)

Ironically, I took a career personality test a while back and the two best jobs that it said I’d be perfect for are make-up artist and model (two career paths linked to Libra). All in all, the two highlighted traits I possess, career wise, are artistic and social (again, Libra qualities). To add more fuel in the fire, I realized that the ruler of the 10th (Venus) is in the 10th – I have Venus in Scorpio in the 10th House. According to some astrologers, they say that’s a VERY lucky position – it indicates fame and fortune.

I aspire to be an actor (yet again – another Libran career) and even a tarot reader told me that I’m “destined” to be an actor, for it’ll relieve my karmic debt but on some sights, they indicate the chart ruler determines what your life purpose is.

Being a Sagittarius Sun and Sagittarius Rising, Jupiter – in my chart – is in Virgo in the 9th House (though it just left the 8th House grasp). Jupiter in the 9th indicates a traveler and a teacher (as well as a student) and being that in Virgo – I bring an air of service, accuracy, precision and organization.

    I digress.

    What do you think?

I wonder about Venus in Scorpio being lucky when it is the ruler of the Midheaven. I’m starting to get more into rulers of houses and how they show the way that the potentials of a house will unfold. I don’t want to be negative, but if Venus is the ruler of the 10th house and is in fall in Scorpio…then I just wonder. Where have you read that?

      • Zodiacal_macaw_1210 says:

Michelle, Venus falls in Virgo – Venus is detriment in Aries and Scorpio.

Well, Venus is not only about romance, attraction and love but it’s also about art, beauty and creativity. I always look at Scorpio as an intense, passionate, powerful, emotional, insightful sign whose major flaw are jealousy, possessiveness, obsessiveness and being vindictive, manipulative and spiteful.

I can see Scorpio do really well in modeling – especially in the edgier and high fashion shots. Same goes with acting – with all that passion, intensity and power.

Some individuals who have Venus in Scorpio in the 10th House include:

        Meg Ryan
        Goldie Hawn
        Susan Sarandon
        Sylvia Brown
        Condoleezza Rice

I wonder about Venus in Scorpio being lucky when it is both the ruler of the 10th house and placed in the 10th house. I’ve begun paying more attention to house rulers and whether they show the way that the potentials of a house will play out. If Venus is in fall in Scorpio, then that would seem to indicate that potentials of the 10th house might not play out the way you’d like them to – but, I’m early in learning about this, so I don’t want to be negative. Where have you read that Venus in Scorpio is lucky for career?

Hi Michelle! What house system is in Your opinion/experience the best? I used to believe that equal works best for me but now I only tend to use whole signs which is even more accurated, would You agree with that? :)

I think it’s a good idea to test them out and see which works for you. I like whole signs but lately I’ve been gravitating towards Koch. Thanks for reading, Patricia.
