Astrologese: Speaking Your Language

These past few days I’ve been working on making AstroFix run faster. I’m not a programmer. I have a vague (repeat: vague) idea of what gzip, sprites and future expires headers do, but I really don’t understand what they are or how they work. As I’ve been poring over this information, it hit me: this is exactly how non-astrologers feel trying to understand the language of astrology. Non-astrologers feel the same way that I feel trying to understand the language of computer geeks: frustrated, angry, annoyed, lost, stranded, left out in the cold, not part of the club, out of my depth, in over my head, bewildered, betrayed (getting a little dramatic, lol)…and in desperate need of guidance, help, and straightforward answers.

It's all so absurd

I hear ya!

Help! My gzip biquintiles my sprite!

You've given a nice example of the importance in translating our work into understandable terms. We can possess tons of information, but if we can't make folks understand how it applies in real life, what's the point? Nice to remind us of this during Gemini.

Yes! I usually think, “But what does it really mean?”

My future expires headers septiles the midpoint of my sprites and gzip :P

If it makes my blog faster, do I need to understand how it works?

No, you don't- I probably don't either- but I like knowing how things work and why
