The Ascendant Template

constellation embroidery Each ascendant forms the template for a particular type of personality. People with the same ascendant have the same ascendant template. People with the same ascendant have similar house connections.

How the Houses are Connected

  • Aries and Scorpio houses are connected by Mars (Mars is Scorpio’s traditional ruler)
  • Taurus and Libra houses are connected by Venus
  • Gemini and Virgo houses are connected by Mercury
  • Sagittarius and Pisces houses are connected by Jupiter (Jupiter is Pisces’s traditional ruler)
  • Capricorn and Aquarius houses are connected by Saturn (Saturn is Aquarius’s traditional ruler)

Cancer and Leo houses do not connect to the other houses. The Sun and Moon each rule only one sign.

People with the same ascendant have the same houses connected

paper dolls optimizedHouses that are connected by rulership have similarities in expression and the affairs of those houses are joined in some way.

Everyone with Libra rising has the 2nd house and 7th house connected by Mars. Their earned income and self-esteem are connected to their partnerships, and vice versa. Money and significant relationships go hand in hand. Their ability to earn their own money affects their relationships, getting their priorities straight affects their ability to be an equal partner in a relationship, their partners have an affect on their self-esteem, etc…

Looking at Mars gives more information about the connection between the 2nd and 7th house. If Mars is in Scorpio in the 3rd house then 2nd and 7th house issues are pursued forcefully and perhaps the solution is found through communication and listening. If Mars is in Cancer in the 9th house then perhaps 2nd and 7th house issues are pursued indirectly and the solution may be found through travel or mind expansion.

Variations on each person’s template come through the sign and house placement of the ruler of the two connected houses, as well that ruler’s aspects to other planets in the birth chart.

The Way that Opposite Signs are Connected

Opposite signs have the same pairs of houses connected.

Anyone with Aries rising has the 1st and 8th house connected and anyone with Libra rising also has the 1st and 8th house connected. The difference is that Aries rising has the 1st and 8th house connected by Mars, while Libra rising has the 1st and 8th house connected by Venus.

Having these pairs of connected houses in common gives even more depth to the notion that opposite signs are more alike than they may care to admit.

It gets frustrating for me when I see that there are these multiple house systems and thus multiple interpretations to a person. A single chart already allows a peek into practically infinite possibilities, but at least they fit into a broad theme. With so many types of charts, it gets difficult to reconcile so many themes into a single person’s potential life map. What’s the best way to approach this conundrum? Have you personally found a technique to merge interpretations or do you vouch for a single chart type to be the best ( for instance, between whole houses and placidus) ? In my chart, there is a wide interception of Capricorn and Cancer, and so your suggested interconnections between houses will only work if I choose to read whole signs . But in there, because I have many angular planets and a late degree Scorpio ascendant, a lot of stuff shifts. Help please!

    • Hi EspitaS,

You’re right, it can be very confusing. Each house system offers a different lens to view your chart. It’s like asking 20 different people to tell you about yourself. None of them is right, none of them is wrong, but most likely you’re going to gravitate towards the person’s whose viewpoint most resembles your own.

I used to use Placidus all the time, but now I look at Placidus and whole signs, moving towards whole signs only more and more. The reason I’m moving towards whole signs is because it offers a “whole” picture. Rather than seeing myself in bit and pieces, fragments that need to be integrated, I get a more complete overall picture of who I am and where I’m going. Because I am drawn to modalities of wholeness, this approach suits me better.

Thanks a ton for responding, I really appreciate that you took the time. I read my own and a couple of others’ charts as drawn according to the equal house system and boy! It made so much more sense. I would love it if you could write more posts on connected houses. For instance, how could a connection between the 7th and the 12th houses play out? This concept of a template is really fascinating, Please do elaborate upon it.

        Thank you 🙂

        • It might take a while to get to the topic of connected houses, but I’ll keep it in mind 🙂 Thanks for reading.

this article is very wrong !!! i have cancer ascendant but house 12 in taurus and house 11 in aries. house signs depends on the hour you are born and the place . ecuator houses are smaller because of earth shape so doesnt mean that all cancer risings have same house rulers . my mars rules 6 and 11, venus rules 5 and 12 and that is from your gemini “template”. so article is wrong

    • This article describes the basic template based on equal houses … that is why I’m using the word “template.” Yes, there can be huge variations in actual house sizes and the actual signs that cover each house.

  • Amy

Pisces rising here with Jupiter in Virgo in my 7th whole house.  I lean toward Hellenistic whole houses myself.  I also have Mars retrograde 4 degrees after my rising.

    • Thank you for stopping by, Amy. I use whole signs and Placidus.

  • i have libra asc 1st & 8th house connected by venus. but my venus is cancer in the 10th house. My venus is opposite. SO many oppositions what does this mean?

    • Michelle

You have a good perspective on relationships, but you may have trouble recognizing when you are the one causing problems and when it is not the other person.

  • Amy

I want to know How plants on the ascendant affect the appearance ??I have Neptune & Uranus conj my cap ascendant , and i have a Huge self-image problems
i always catch people staring at me which breaks my self confidence
and i have on social skills and no friends i feel like an alien 🙁 i don’t know what is my problem

another thing i noticed is that i have a sag sun in the 12th house but i don’t fit the description of  a sag  ! i feel more like a Pisces and i attract the people of this sign   which is funny becuz i don’t have any thing in Pisces

can you plez explain that to me !!!

    • Michelle

      Hi Amy,

I’m not exploring planets and appearance right now but that’s a great topic that I will keep in mind for future posts.

The 12th house has similarities to Pisces, so having your Sun in the 12th house gives it some Piscean qualities. You might also want to see if your Sun is in aspect to Neptune as well because that would give it some Neptune flavor (both the 12th house and Pisces are ruled by Neptune).

  •  Funny how you mention Aries and Libra because I’m rising Libra and my wife is rising Aries. Her North node is in the 1st house and mine is in the 8th house both Taurus. Seems like there could be a significance here.

    • Michelle

@jd:twitter If you look at your charts using the whole signs house system your North Nodes will be in opposition by house: hers in the 2nd house and your in the 8th house. If you look at your charts using the whole signs house system your North Nodes will be in opposition by house: hers in the 2nd house and your in the 8th house.

In Whole Sign everything shifts, but my Ascendant is still Gemini 29’04 as it is in Equal or Koch, which I normally use.

In Whole sign my Sun,Uranus,NN,Mercury,Vertex and Mars all shift from 5th to 6th. Saturn goes from 2nd/3rd to 3rd. Moon from conjunct IC in 3rd to 4th house. Pluto from 4th to 5th. Neptune from 6th to 7th. Venus from 7th to 8th. Jupiter Rx from 11th to 12th. Chiron Rx stays in the 11th.

    Gemini Ascendant
1st and 4th are connected by Mercury
    2nd no connections
    3rd no connections
5th and 12th are connected by Venus
6th and 11th are connected by Mars
7th and 10th are connected by Jupiter
8th and 9th are connected by Saturn

    Cancer Ascendant
    1st no connections
    2nd no connections
3rd and 12th are connected by Mercury
4th and 11th are connected by Venus
5th and 10th are connected by Mars
6th and 9th are connected by Jupiter
7th and 8th are connected by Saturn

    • Your Moon moving to the 4th house conjunct IC gives it even more power because it’s in its natural house. Do you think you’re more of a 5th house Sun person or a 6th house Sun person?

      • Joyrjw

        😀 Thank you.

To be honest, I’m not sure which one I am. It seems like I’m both of them.
I’ve been accused of wearing my heart on my sleeve and I’ve been told I’m very creative, imaginative, artistic.
I enjoy helping as long I’m not taken for granted or manipulated.
I’ve also been called upon to help with medical treatment for people and/or animals.
I wanted to be an artist, writer, dancer, nutritionist, veterinarian and psychologist. lol!
        It’s very confusing.

I wonder if having a Virgo moon could be responsible for my mixed up feelings about this?

The Sun is excellently placed in the fifth house, the second of the three fire houses (first, fifth and ninth) of spirit. You’re a natural at any and all kinds of creative self-expression: music, drama, art, writing, whatever you will. Too much self-projection will bring obstacles and humbling experiences, however, as the fifth is the house of hidden karma from too much self will. Often flamboyant and driven, you are very expressive and outgoing when it comes to your feelings and emotions; it is easy for you to wear your heart on your sleeve. Exercise forethought and discrimination in your love affairs. Animals and children play a large part in your life.

With your Sun in the sixth house you’re service-oriented, and enjoy attending to the needs of others. It is important, however, that you do indeed find your way of serving others, for your sense of purpose needs that particular direction in life to feel fulfilled, and in helping others you will shine. A good worker, you’re always thinking of things and caring for people. You’re very discriminating and can sort out the good apples from the bad. Humility and cooperation are the lessons here with your Sun in the sixth house.

I’m loving this blog Michelle…keep it coming, Meena

  • Cshanin

Virgo rising…and everywhere I go geminis follow haha…male and female…I really like them too but for some reason I can never snag a dang virgo…what’s up with that? …Gemini MC of course with mercury in the 7th (placidus) and mercury in the 8th (whole signs) and aries in mercury…Maybe it’s my virgo moon, saturn or northnode…that’s a lot of virgo for this pisces.

    • So are you heading toward whole signs lately? What are your Pisces planets again?

      • Cshanin

Pisces sun and mars in the 6th & 7th house… aquarius venus in the 5th & 6th house…. with sun opposite moon and ascendant…

As for placidus & whole signs, it looks like I use both but I still feel undecided…I mean really it’s a choice of moon conjunct saturn in the 12th or 1st house…not exactly an upgrade… have you made a decision yet? In some ways both house systems work…but I think Robert Hand is right… planets physically play out in the next house…I can certainly relate to having pluto in the 1st but my second house pluto finances say otherwise… Meena

        • I haven’t come to a definite decision, but I’m convinced that I absolute need to. Robert Hand is veering toward whole signs nowadays- he was at the conference I attended in May.

So are you a workaholic Pisces or a longing for love Pisces?

          • Cshanin

I would have to say I work for hardly nothing and I’m longing for love… I used to only dream of being accomplished but now all I seem to think about is dying without ever falling in love… from the looks of my Midheaven happiness will never be found in my career. You saw Robert Handdd cool!!! Meena

          • That was supposed to read, “…but I’m not convinced that I absolutely need to.”

          • Anonymous

If you read the work of Gonzalo Pena Tamez in rectifying ascendants mathematically using midpoints, there’s very good reason to believe that both the whole sign and near-placidus points are canonical and important cusps, with the near-placidus points (as each is rectified, but usually pretty close if the ascendant is rectified) being more useful for actual prediction. This falls in line with what Ptolemy said 2000 years ago, which is pretty amazing considering Gonzo is using totally different and much more rigorous mathematical models.

            • I have to read Tamez’s work. I have so many books on my plate right now, but I look forward to getting to his work.

  • firetiger

    another note:

when people say that they feel more like their ascendant or that their ascendant sign is a better reflection of them, this ‘exercise’ is a good way of explaning why. and also a good explanation for people who agree that you act more like the ‘pop astrology’ or ‘stereotypical’ version of your ascendant sign (ex: libra ascendants having MARS be the ruler of the 7th). This is the reason why I see how Vedic astrologers, who use whole signs, would put an extra emphasis on the Ascendant even over the sun.

    • I think the ascendant is important because it dictates where everything else falls, but I still think the Sun is more important. Personally, when I start getting too Virgo like, I almost start to feel like I’m putting on an act or like I’m becoming robotic. My Sun feels like “me.” That could be a reflection of having the Sun in exaltation. Maybe people with the Sun in fall or detriment feel more in tune with their ascendant or Moon. What do you think?

      • firetiger

yeah i definitely think that the sun is more easily expressed when it’s exalted. I think any planet that is in dignity or exalted feels the best expression- for example Jupiter and Pluto are easily the most expressive planets in my chart as Jupiter is in Pisces and Pluto is in Scorpio (and also my chart ruler and the planet where Sun, Merc, and Venus are diposted). Hm so I can’t say I feel like I’m ever putting on an act with my ascendant, but that is because it’s in Scorpio. My sun being in the 12th, again, is probably another reason why the sun can feel “hidden”.

I also notice that Aquarians seem to take on more of their moon or ascendant sign too.

        • I also notice that Aquarians seem to take on more of their moon or ascendant sign too. .I can’t say I’ve noticed that. Aquarius and Leo are the easiest Sun signs for me to spot. I guess by “putting on an act” what I really mean is that the traits are very outwardly directed whereas my Sun in the 8th is much more inwardly directed. And, with the Moon in the 12th, when I started to get overly outward oriented I begin to feel a little false, like I’m not completely being myself.

          Thanks for replying ft 😀

  • firetiger

    gotta love whole signs! 😀

  • Verena

Great article. It definitely gives a different perspective that adds more insight to the chart’s dynamics. However, I have an interception and thus another sign axis doubled in my chart, which distorts the nice listing you have put up (thank you though) and requires some abstract thinking on my part. Well, Venus Rx in Scorpio is the right transit to figure out these complicate entanglements. 🙂

    • If you go to astro.com and view your chart using whole signs it will be quite easy to see how your chart looks using the basic template. It certainly can be hard to accept your chart without interception and double cusps if that is what you’re used to looking at. Thanks for stopping by Verena.

My whole sign vs Placidus chart makes me feel funny.I have Mars in the 8th in Placidus , with intercepted houses. In whole signs I have Mars in the 9th in Sag but in mutual reception to Jupiter which in in the 8th in Scorpio ( I think;I am not 100% on that lol)I’m not quite sure that it means anything different though? I feel I express my Mars…appropriately ,as it is delineated for my Placidus chart lol

Also, do you think people who have the same element rising can share a fondness for one another?

    • Switching from one house system to another does give a bit of an identity crisis and it can be hard to accept the differences.

      What is your rising sign?

do you think people who have the same element rising can share a fondness for one another?
When people have the same element rising it gives them a similar outlook and a similar approach which puts them in sync. Whether or not it leads to long-lasting harmony or fondness still depends on rest of the chart. Looking at where the chart rulers are can give you some clues about what type of Virgo rising, Taurus rising or Capricorn rising a person is, for example.

      • Anonymous

It’s does weird me out a little bit 🙂 Many of my planets shift to the next house so my 6th house is empty (all moved to seventh) and then I look to where I can find my Virgo tendencies (planets positioned in the 6th) and according to whole signs I have zero Virgo lol I am not a proficient astrologer so I may just be missing something.Oh I forgot to add the rising sign, opps.I’m an Aries rising :)I am partnered with another fire rising (Leo) And we have similar modes of going forth. In whole signs his chart ruler/house suits him quite a bit more versus his Placidus chart.Do you have a preferred house system you use?

        • I like using Placidus and whole signs. With my own chart I feel that whole signs is a better reflection of who I am. When it comes to my boyfriend’s chart, nearly every single placement changes, and it’s difficult to wrap my mind around those changes.

  • I’m guessing if your ascendant is in the later degrees you’d have to use the next sign for guidance. My Asc is at 26 Sag, but I use the Capricorn connections for my chart since they fit the best as opposed to Sagittarius rising. Does this color my rising with a more Saturn tinge than that of a middle of the road Sagittarius rising?

    • For this exercise (?) your going to set your ascendant to 00 Sagittarius, so you’ll follow the Sag ascendant template. It follows the whole signs method. It’s going to be difficult to follow at first if you’re used to using Placidus, and especially if you have intercepted signs.
