Saturn’s transit through my 1st house began in August 2008. My first house cusp begins at 11 Virgo. By January 2009 (4 months later) I had some realizations:
- I’m getting older (it had to happen- I found my very first gray hair July 2008).
- The image that I had of my body, in my mind, was not the way my body actually looked. I was holding onto an image of myself about 6 years younger.
- I needed exercise.
Saturn in the 1st house made me want to commit to getting in shape and pay attention to what I was eating. I started a food journal, an exercise journal, taking digestive enzymes (Virgo does rules digestion), and vitamins.
When I began exercising I could not believe how out of shape I had become. I was not overweight, but I had little muscle tone. My knees throbbed after only 15 minutes on the stationary bike. I was such a wimp! My Aries Venus was pissed at me. Aries Venus admires strength, tone, muscularity, endurance, and fitness – and I had none of those.
It took about 2 months before going to the gym stopped being a chore. At 3 months I would get panicky if I thought something was going to interfere with my workout. At 6 months the exercise “high” kicked in. Now, almost 2 years later, I can’t imagine not going.
Discipline and Getting Fit
I have a natal square between Mars at 10 Cancer and Pluto at 10 Libra, and physically pushing myself through this Saturn transit helped me get in touch with the strong energy inherent in this aspect. I learned something about my own self-propulsion and ability to meet objectives and goals without a coach or teacher cheering me on. I developed self-discipline and found an outlet for aggression and anger.
Today I feel that the image I carry of myself in my mind perfectly (Virgo) matches the way that I really (Saturn) appear (1st house) to everyone else. With hard work and commitment I am achieving the physical goals that I set for myself.
Saturn is making an extended stay in my 1st house, because of its current retrograde, and I want to make sure that I am 110% committed to taking care of myself. Saturn transiting through the 1st house sets the tone for the next 28 years of its cycle through the natal chart, until it reaches the Ascendant again, and shears away the dead weight to prepare for the next cycle. When Saturn goes through the first house it crystallizes the approach to the next chapter of life. Habits get set in stone at this time – so they better be good habits. Part of the Virgo rising journey is to attend to the health of the body – that’s what I’m doing.
